The life of an asphalt road pavement fundamentally depends on the adhesion between bitumen and aggregates, and is the result of the ability of the bitumen to resist the static and dynamic stresses caused by traffic and the action of atmospheric agents such as air, light and water. Traffic and atmospheric agents, however, will affect the duration of the asphalt, which over time will undergo physical and chemical changes, deformations and cracks. 95% of an asphalt consists of a mixture of “stone aggregates” with a specific granulometric curve. The choice of aggregates depends on the technical requirements that the asphalt layer must have. Chemically they can be “acid”, in which case they have the characteristic of attracting negative charges on their surface or “alkaline”, in which case they attract positive charges. The “acid” aggregates are characterized by a high silica content, while the “basic” ones contain carbonates.
